Why Become A Southern Baptist?

One Mission

Southern Baptists are Great Commission Baptists. Since its founding 175 years ago, the Southern Baptist Convention has existed for one reason—"for the purpose of eliciting, combining, and directing the energies of the Baptist denomination of Christians, for the propagation of the Gospel." Now, that same convention has grown to include more than 50,000 unique and diverse churches working together to make disciples of all peoples.

Diverse Churches

Southern Baptist churches are as different as the cities, towns, and communities they inhabit. Only when we see how these unique, autonomous churches come together to impact the world around them with the gospel do we begin to see the beauty of their cooperation. Although Southern Baptist churches vary in size, age, language, worship style, and more, we agree on core biblical truths (outlined in The Baptist Faith and Message) and the Gospel of Jesus Christ we seek to share.

Working Together

Southern Baptists fulfill this mission of proclaiming the gospel to everyone through both local ministry and cooperative ministry. Undergirding the cooperative ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention is the shared belief that we are better together. By working together, we can better advance the gospel through our collective effort and funding. The Southern Baptists' Cooperative Program supports evangelism and church planting through organizations like the International Mission Board, the North American Mission Board, Southern Baptist seminaries, and more.
