Proposition 139

The Southern Baptist Convention has spoken repeatedly and decisively opposing abortion. The Baptist Faith and Message 2000 states, “We should speak on behalf of the unborn and contend for the sanctity of all human life from birth to natural death.” For that reason, we would like to urge you to vote against Proposition 139, which, if passed, would add an amendment to the Arizona Constitution to make unlimited and unrestricted access to abortion a right in our state. The number of the proposition is ironic when we consider that Psalm 139 says, “For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made” (vv. 13-14). The Bible affirms that life begins in the womb and we are created in the image of God. A vote against Prop 139 is a vote for Psalm 139! This issue goes beyond political rhetoric or party affiliation. Arizona already has a law in place that allows for exceptional cases so there is no danger posed to women. This amendment, which could not be altered as a part of the state’s constitution, would create numerous complications for families. What has been lost in all the propaganda is protecting the lives of the unborn and their right to life. That is a biblical and moral value. We hope you will join us in standing for the sanctity of human life in voting against Prop 139.
